Slumdog Millionaire
DVD Review by Kam Williams
Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) was just one correct answer away from winning 20 million rupees on India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” when the police decided to question him about his extraordinary string of luck. After all, no one ever lasted this long on the TV game show before, and the producers doubted that this dirt-poor, uneducated orphan from the teeming slums of Mumbai could have achieved his unlikely feat without cheating.
Therefore, the night before his return for his final appearance on the program, they arrange for the authorities to drag the innocent 18 year-old down to the station for a little Abu Ghraib-level interrogation away from the public eye. But despite being tortured by a couple of sadistic cops (Irfan Khan and Saurabh Shukla), Jamal matter-of-factly explains exactly how he came to acquire the answers to such seemingly obscure trivia questions.
For, all the unfortunate lad has to share is his sorrowful autobiography, an endless tale of woe which he reveals via a kaleidoscope of colorful flashbacks. Surprisingly, it turns out that he’s actually less concerned with taking home the grand prize than with using his TV publicity as a means of finding his long-lost love, Latika (Freida Pinto), a fellow street urchin and fan of the popular quiz show.
This is the engaging premise of Slumdog Millionaire, the independent flick from India which swept this year’s Academy Awards, garnering eight Oscars in all, including Best Picture. Credit co-directors Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan for cleverly interweaving the three non-simultaneous strands of Jamal’s life story into an absorbing, genre-defying romantic thriller.
Will the industrious protagonist die behind bars while being interrogated or will he give the right answer to that final question, win the loot and be reunited with his sweetheart? A dizzying and delightful spectacle well worth the investment for the kaleidoscope of colors from the Subcontinent alone.
Excellent (4 stars)
Rated R for violence, profanity and disturbing images.
In English and Hindi with subtitles.
Running time: 120 minutes
Studio: Fox Home Entertainment
DVD Extras: A dozen deleted scenes, two commentaries, “The Making of” documentary, and a music video of the Oscar-winning song “Jai Ho.”

Back in the day I was a Whitney Houston fan. Her voice was like no other voice I had ever heard and my cop boyfriend at the time decided to walk me into the backstage of her performance at Radio City Music Hall to just enjoy the show. I had no idea I would be on the stage with her friends, mother, BeBe nd CeCe Wiynan, Gloria Estefan, Jasmine Guy and of course, Bobby Brown. This wasn’t the first or play or concert I had gained access to backstage. I just had this air about me that refused to pay for tickets for anything and sit far away from performances. I wasn’t that backstage groupie, but I was certainly on my way to being bonafide media and a journalist. Upon observing Whitney walk right past me for several performances, I realized how difficult it is for artists to perform under all of those lights. She was sweating profusively. Meanwhile, Bobby Brown and his entourage were walking around like his bodyguard. I wasn’t sure why since if anyone needed a bodyguard, it should be Whitney. Both Whitney and Bobby looked well, but I couldn’t help notice all of that sweating on their brows. Now years later, this news surfaced frm AOL NEWS, “A new book claims that Whitney Houston once handed out a whopping $400,000 in ransom money. The pay-off took place in 1993, says the National Enquirer, and was done in order to protect then husband Bobby Brown from the Preacher Crew gang. At the time, the gang had kidnapped Brown after he put off a $25,000 payment on cocaine. Guess he could’ve used a bodyguard. (March 26).” Now I have a better recollection of my own premonitions back then. It seemed to me like Whitney Houston was worried while performing on stage. Her voice cracked when she hit that high note for the song, “I will Always Love You!” When Bobby Brown performed on stage, you could tell they were love birds. Both had changed into fanciful t-shirts with grafitti and bling and were as street as a ghetto couple can get. I knew Bobby’s career was in jeopardy because he just didn’t act right. I remember saying, that guy is going to bring Whitney Houston down if he keeps hanging out with the kind of people he surrounded himself with. It is now obvious that he had no choice. While artists are under a tremendous strain to fulfill gigs on the road, it doesn’t mean they have to say yes to mind altering drugs to get through the stress. All it take is one bad person in the industry to lead you wrong and these artists becoem victims of their own success. I even noticed tears from Whitney Houston’s mother’s eyes after she performed and those weren’t tears of joy. I recall a girl growing up who made her parents give her money weekly and mentioned she was going to be killed if she didn’t give a gang some money. She had even told her parents that it might be best for her to get in trouble with the law and go to jail since this gang would not stop at anything to get money from her. Later on, we found out she had told a lie and no one was trying to get money from her. With all of this said, it will be a shocker if Whitney indeed has written a tell-all book that exposes her trials and tribulations. In my opinion, her voice can never be duplicated. Whitney is one of a kind and neither can Bobby Brown’s aura be duplicated. They were both unique talents with literally “Something in Common!” and with respect to the title of a duet song they once sang together. I can’t wait for this book! My older brother use to do New Edition’s advertising campaigns back in the day and always said that Bobby was a fool, but I think he was the baddest when he was the King of R&B. No one can dispute that. There is no telling how big Whitney and Bobby could have become if they had never …. (You finish the sentence). Going to listen to an ‘ole Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston cd right now.

According to Disilgold.com Insiders, Rocsi seemed to have a small scar on her head during a taping of BET’s 106 & Park which she hosts along with Terrence. The two are a fun duo and well admired by the RnB community for being down to earth and utmost professional on the show. Even grown folks watch the show which showcases the top video countdowns voted in by music listeners. Now it is being reported that a bottle was tossed in the air in a club and hit Rocsi in the head. The person stated as the culprit behind the vicious act is rapper Queen Pen who happens to be an author, but she has not made any statements confirming this report as of yet. Apparently, Queen Pen is friends with actress LisaRaye, an actress and fashion designer best known for her role in Players Club and marriage to Prime Minister Misick.

Before you read this article, Keri is a myspace citizen friend and so when a new album especially from the ladies come out, Disilgold is there because we simply don’t get the same promotions as the fellows, but this time, the fellows are supporting Keri big tyme. If you scroll down, Ne-Yo joins Keri’s media campaign efforts and I guess we’re the only media to document the transition of a songwriter to a mega-recording artist at the very beginning for the umpteenth time. 9 out of ten times we are right.

A connoisseur of writing top hits for today’s heavy hitters, it’s now Keri Hilson’s turn to “return the favor” to herself and long time fans of her work as a songwriter whose accolades are long overdue. Her list of credits as a songwriter include “Diddy, Usher, Ciara, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Omarion, The Pussycat Dolls, & Britney Spears” to name a few. As one of the producers of the song writing team called “The Clutch,” and what some artists today would like to best keep as a secret or never give rise or a name to as the magic behind the creation of top hits, Keri’s talent is no longer a secret.
There has been a symphony of ovation for this artist who stayed the course. The anticipation builds because some people are buzzing that Keri Hilson may very well debut with a million plus copies sold of her new album, thus surpassing Lil’ Wayne’s miraculous Hip Hop album debut. Arriving onto the music scene with production from Timbaland on the heavy acoustic cut, “Scream,” and an impressive debut ballad called “Energy” accompanied by a video that rings as an anthem for folks in relationships as Keri knocks down her enemies in the boxing ring, listeners began to tune in.
Then her single, “Turning Me On,” suddenly appeared from nowhere to set off an urban edge vibe to what was considered just another pop princess destined for mainstream success. 50 million Myspace music player hits later, it is clear and evident that Keri is more than a success, but has already reached the stratosphere of her career as a top contender here to stay and bring more hits to come. This time, Keri Hilson is bringing the heat for her own album titled, “In a Perfect World.”
A March 4th video diary sent to Keri’s massive base of supporters for the artist herself, reveals that her album will hit stores on March 24th, finally. For some reason her album was pushed back in November 2008 but perhaps, the best does come to those who wait because Keri’s chart topper, “Turning Me On” has taken the number one spot for 2 weeks on the Billboard charts.
Everyone is joining Keri’s wave. She even has a “Are you a Turn On?” Contest for listeners to receive an autographed copy of her cd. Make sure you “Turn On” Keri’s album and support another dyme diva on the rise. This songwriter is on her way. If some one asks you, tell them you heard it first on DisilgoldSOUL. To vote for Keri Hilson as most stylish celebrity, visit www.Disilgold.com. Do you know of an artist who should be the next DisilgoldSOUL, email Disilgold@aol.com.
JUST IN: DisilgoldSOUL is the first media to release footage of Kanye West and Keri Hilson “Making Love.” We’re shocked! Who knew! Brace yourself. Graphic adult content. Kids close your eyes. We aren’t sure what to say. Guess when the album drops, everyone will need to read the fine credits to see what is going on!

TOPIC #1- Will children’s books be required to pass FDC regulations for lead content?
Most children’s books do not propose a high lead level threat, but in order to ensure children are safe when reading or handling color picture books new guidelines to test books before permitted to reach the mainstream market were considered. Some will argue that this is another way for the book publishing industry to regulate publisher’s use of printing companies other than those approved for conglomerate gain.
Printing companies who do not meet guidelines would go out of business. Authors or publishers may be mandated to submit their books for approval and conformity of low levels of lead toxicity found in ink for printing of color picture books. Children’s books that do not meet these guidelines would be banned from the school market and all current books pulled from shelves.
A seal of conformity would be mandated and anyone trying to sell a children’s book without the seal would be fined or quite possibly jailed if this is approved by the Supreme Court. Thus far, researcherss believe that children’s books will not be included in mandatory testing for lead before istribution as most toys with lead traces. After many toys deported from countries like China and Japan were discovered to have high lead levels, the FD& C stepped in. Some argue that this measure was only considered because so many American publishers begain to seek printing at very low costs overseas. Others argue that regulations are mandatory since so many high tech books nowadays have removable or enhanced parts from musical sound boxes to movable accessories.
However, most children’s books do not have removable parts that a child could put into one’s mouth and absorb lead by accident. Many children book companies were horrified of this news, and since all books would have to be pulled off the market for testing. It has been reported that only future books from a set date would have to be submitted to pass guidelines.
Hopefully, this measure will not be mandated if indeed children’s books are found to propose no threat. For more articles on self-publishing and marketing, visit www.disilgold.com or visit www.LiteraryDiva.com to ASK HEATHER publishing industry questions.

Michael Jackson began his career as a child prodigy. Who could forget his smooth vocals, charismatic spins and popularization of the moonwalk began in the Bronx with breakdancing of course, but made all his own. It was as if he was dancing on air with unabashed confidence. Audiences from Black to White felt his energy and gravitated to either the tube or his concerts met with an overture of fanatic screams. Michael Jackson still has this effect on people. It doesn’t matter who you are. When Michael enters the room people go crazy!
Michael made it possible for many young black child singers to believe they could rise to his success. America fell in love with Michael and he became the most imitated artist in the world from his fancy sequined gloves, white Bobbie socks and top show biz hat to highwater pants, crouch grabbing scenes and military style jackets. Don’t forget those Michael fits in his songs. Whatever Michael grunted about just worked.
Add the dark shades and long black hair. It is clear to this day that Michael Jackson continues to outstyle America. Michael is a phenom who took risks, set trends and defied any obstacles. He captivated his audience without backing down by setting high expectations for himself. Any album you listen to from Michael Jackson today can be played over and over without getting tired of a single track. Michael always gave off a persona of a cool, clam and collected spirit and he could really, really dance and really, really, really sing.
Michael’s grandeur career took off internationally with his Thriller Album. Who knew that videos packaged as mini movie films would change the face of video production. Today you see evidence of the mini movie in great videos like T.I.s “Live Your Life” with Rihanna. Everyone loves the underdog and wants the underdog to win.
MTV was one of the pioneering tv networks other than niche cable video shows like Video Music Box to infuse Michael Jackson’s music onto the mainstream making his sound universal. He disappeared for years it seems and was written off as if his reign was over. But history would not be erased for the genius of Michael Jackson had already been written.
He was met with a sleuth of money hungry opportunists who plotted to set the singer up , but who never served time for his accuser’s accusations which could be proven without a doubt if true. It had even appeared as if Jackson had bought his way out of trouble. Celebrity friends had turned their backs on the beloved pop icon just like that, but the truth finally surfaced that there were lies, misconceptions, deceit and corroborated slander as Jackson revealed monies were misappropriated by former producers. So many artists have toured to only find their money stolen, contracts shattered and people in their camp suddenly writing bad checks.
Like PRINCE or Roger Nelson who changed his name to a symbol rather than Prince in an attempt to shed light on a bad music contract, Jackson exposed all that he had been going through with an open letter to his fans in Ebony Magazine years ago. His less talented sister who seemed outed revealed child abuse in the family and this simply opened the door for predators to overcompensate.. Every where you turned on the tv, Michael was being hit with lawsuits. It was enough to destroy his career. His image was tarnished among the generation of supporters who were there for his career from the start, and when he was the lead singer of the Jackson Five many years ago. It was like people lost faith and believed what they wished to believe.
One of the groundbreaking Guinness Book record holders in the 1980′s with more wealth acquired than any other singer at his time. Even media referred to him as JACKO in regard to his skin condition. With a new generation of young listeners, it seems befitting for Michael Jackson to make a big comeback. He’s being offered well in the millions for foreign touring.
At 50+, you wonder can Michael make a dramatic comeback to surpass his former reign? We think so at Disilgold and even bigger than ever imagined. I think Tyler will produce his biopic one day. They say talent never dies, but it just keeps getting better. If he comes to New York, I would certainly support Michael and know that with his amassed wealth he’s THE ONE to save the music industry. People just aren’t buying albums with the tenacity of a Beatles album. You have singers and performers and then you have icons like Michael Jackson. He isn’t talent. He’s a prodigy and there’s only one Michael Jackson. There will never ever be another MICHAEL JACKSON! NOT NEVER! Respect due.
Just in! Michael announces he’s back on tour. Check out this video. And tell folks you heard about it on www.Disilgold.com. The Hottest site on the net, period. See new pic of Mic doing his new dance move on www.disilgold.com this week.
Heather: Come on now. That is one ignorant question. Why no other than Grandmaster Flash! You better recognize! Here’s a video I found on YOUTUBE! There should be a MOVIE DEDICATED TO THE ERA OF HIP HOP MUSIC!
