The Element of Failure or Success: The Alicia Key’s Album Review

The Element of Freedom begins with a brief poem inspired by Maya Angelou that intertwines with a neo-soul modern day psychedelic funk groove track bringing out the raspy  side of Alicia Keys  vocals in “Love is Blind.”

The tone is set  like a beautiful poetical symphony as the song blends into the next chart topper already spinning on airwaves, “Doesn’t Mean Anything.”While a free flowing song of hope from romance lost, there is a touch of sadness and regret that penetrates the listeners ears like shock treatment. Alicia Key’s mellow voice is built for  this heart-pounding song. It might be one of her greatest songs of all time. She unapologetically captures you for the rest of the cd as the lyrics of ” Try Sleeping with A Broken Heart” pull you through her story of romance lost, found and in limbo.

“Wait Until You See Me Smile,” continues with strong vocals and piano accompaniment warning listeners to not let negativity get you down. This is certainly the song to get folks on their feet at concerts. Your heart beats with each lyric and  strong percussion.

“That’s How Strong My Love Is” reminds me of an old school track, “Tender Love,” but from a female’s perspective. “Unthinkable” is Alicia Keys most mellow track on the album, but it solidifies her trademark sound and ability to harmonize with any music and  make it sheer perfection.

“Love is My Disease”  and “Like the Sea” sort of reflect her opening track theme, but both  are worthwhile listens  infused with just a hint of Carribean flair and pop. The lyrics are what matters for these tracks.
”Put it In a Love Song” with Beyonce’ changes the pace with a Lumidee inspired beat I have heard in uptown New York pumping from car radios. Alicia and Beyonce’ continue the Latin inspired uptown beat movement and I love it. Respect.

“This Bed” is so 1980′s inspired, but upbeat and intoxicating, while “Distance and Time” is a definite Lenny Kravitz, “Let Love Rule,” influenced song ballad.  This one is my favorite from the entire album and “How it Feels to Fly.” Alicia’s album is a winner.  Buy it as a gift for someone you love this holiday.
