Unoriginal Romantic Comedy Squanders Bounty of A-List Stars
If you’ve seen Love Actually (2003), then you have a decent idea of what director Garry Marshall was aiming for with Valentine’s Day, a shameless rip-off with none of the charm of the delightful romantic comedy it so desperately seeks to emulate. The original, set in London during the Christmas season, engagingly explored an array of both lighthearted and sobering relationship issues through the prism of 10 couples in conflict. The essence of Love Actually’s appeal lay in the deceptive fashion in which its endearing characters were introduced, developed and serendipitously intertwined en route to a satisfying payoff.
Yesterday, my house was snowed in about 12 feet and power lines down, but I managed to browse the web with the remaining battery juice from my laptop and came across Letoya Luckett’s update on Myspace at the top of my site. She mentioned she had a new single called, Good to Me. As a lady who asks every celeb, what’s your favorite music as seen in hundreds of interviews syndicated in all major media outlets with Kam Williams and in my GET PERSOULNAL Interviews on www.disilgold.com which you can now see featured at the top of the site from here on out because I have completed my publishing projects , I had to find out what Letoya Luckett was up to since she landed a lead role as Angie in the movie Preacher’s Kid. I am always routing for black women in film because it is a rarity. I was there to support Taraji P. Henson with a release of her first major interview top media pucked up on and as expected, she took off.
First, I want to say it was an honor introducing Wesley Snipes to the stage at the African American Pavilion at Book Expo. A very humble brother, I asked Wesley Snipes in front of an audience of thousands of his fans since day one what inspired him to come out to the literary world and promote a video project he was working on and not long before Hollywood called him to star in Brooklyn’s Finest with one of my favorite actors, Don Cheadle. He graciously said, “YOU!” Wesley Snipes like many author celebrities and to be enjoy our promotions over at www.disilgold.com and www.AmberBooks.com, parent home of my first book deal, Literary Divas. Books bring a love for literature as well as wealth for many. I did not doubt that Wesley was contemplating writing his story. We’ll see if that happens soon.

BET ’s Centric TV launched the Saving Ourselves Haiti Relief Celebrity Telethon produced by Sean Diddy Combs with hosts Pharell and Queen Latifah in support of fundamental and ongoing donations for Haitians in need of clean water. Just one purification packet can clean 10 liters of dirty water soiled with worms, parasites and blood born diseases. Even with a ravaged and ruined country, Haitians rather go hungry then drink the contaminated water. Already over 200,000 Haitians have lost their lives in the worse devastation to hit a coastal island. With efforts of concerts as S.O.S. there is hope for rebuilding the restoration of Haiti ongoing.
What I found amazing were the number of musicians and artists who came out to man the phone lines, perform and encourage viewers to reach out and send just $10 or more. Princess Tiana of Princess of the Frog is a New Role Model for Kids
The Princess and the Frog
Film Review by Kam Williams
Prince Woos Waitress in Latest Disney Animated Adventure
All Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) ever dreamed about as a child was of one day having her own restaurant in New Orleans where she could make gumbo alongside her father (Terrence Howard), an aspiring chef. But he passed away while serving overseas in the military during World War I, leaving it to his widow, Eudora (Oprah Winfrey), to raise their daughter alone on a meager seamstress’ salary. Consequently, Tiana ended up having to work overtime as a waitress in order to save enough money to purchase the abandoned warehouse she wants to convert into an eatery.
Although Baronness Pannonica “Nica” - Rothschild (1913-1988) was born into a very wealthy European dynasty, when she moved to Manhattan in the early Fifties, she gravitated towards another type of royalty altogether, namely, the elite musicians on the New York City jazz scene. She preferred hanging around these African-American innovators, despite the fact that the United States at the time tended to make examples of any whites who dared to fraternize across the color line.
Consequently, she would not only be persecuted in the press because of her associations, but she was even unfairly sentenced to 3 years in prison for possession of just $10 worth of Marijuana. Such odious mistreatment never discouraged the pretty patron of the arts from helping her bebop idols battle their demons ranging from racism to addiction while trying to make a living.
Nica was particularly mesmerized by the work of Thelonious Monk, right from the moment in 1952 that she first heard the haunting strains of “’Round Midnight.” Once she finally had a chance to meet the brilliant pianist/composer, the iconoclastic heiress and the equally-eccentric son of a sharecropper forged an enduring, platonic friendship which would last for the rest of their lives.
That mutually-respectful relationship is the primary focus of The Jazz Baroness, a fascinating documentary directed by Hanna Rothschild. Nica’s gifted great-niece deserves high praise for unearthing reams of riveting archival footage like performances by the Thelonious Monk Quartet of such classics as “Straight, No Chaser,” “Bolivar Blues” and “Nutty.” The tunes have been seamlessly interwoven here with wistful remembrances by Nica’s and Thelonious’ relatives, by noted historians such as Stanley Crouch, Amiri Baraka and Gary Giddins, and by living legends like Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones and Roy Haynes.
Besides the intimate personal story recounting how Nica and Thelonious became virtually inseparable (including the decade leading to his death when he lived in her home), there is a compelling secondary thread providing explanatory, background information which makes the bio-pic all the more meaningful. For, the Rothschilds were Jewish, and their wealth didn’t save some family members from perishing in the Holocaust. So, one can’t help but think that perhaps that terrible tragedy in part explains why Nica would become such a passionate feminist and civil rights pioneer in the face of the toxic nature of the intolerance permeating the cultural fabric of her adopted country.
A must-see period piece not merely for avid jazz fans, but for anyone interested in a history lesson about what life was like just a couple of generations ago when bigotry was still very much accepted as “The American Way.”
Excellent (4 stars)

Running time: 82 minutes

Takers is the no.1 most highly anticipated movie of 2010. With an allstar cast featuring Idris Elba, ( rising actor ) T.I., (Incarcerated Hip Hop star, but not for long) Chris Brown (named the next Michael Jackson by Michael Jackson himself r.i.p.), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek phenom) and Michael Ealy (Zora Neale Hurston Story w/ ex girlfirend Halle Berry), this movie is sure to take over. Bring the action on. Can’t wait to see the chemistry between these actors.Michael Ealy is being playing Mafia Wars on Facebook which you have to be highly intelligent and understand money, how to make real estate investments and steal from the rich to give to the poor. I got to level 9 on day one, but wasn’t too happy when someone who said, “Hey” stole my money from the bank while I wasn’t looking. Michael Ealy is a pretty loyal player to his friends online. Not giving away his alias, but if he’s as hot in the movie as he is at playing Mafia Wars, cinema has a movie star on the way. Request new pics of cast members on www.disilgold.comloading daily.
Everyone tuned into Beyonce’s “I Am Yours!” Lincoln Concert on ABC TV this past Thanksgiving week. After nabbing 10 Grammy’s this was her first solo concert on national television ever. There have been plenty of mixed reviews from the songs Beyonce’ chose to sing to her outfits, but I found this snippet of the concert right on point as Beyonce’ lightheartedly admonishes a seasoned singer in the audience who not only volunteers to sing her rendention of Donna Summer’s hook, “Love to Love ya baby,” but out sings her hands down.
A student of Bedford Stuyvesant, Gabourey Sidibe, walked into a casting call for the movie, Precious, based on the bestselling book Push by author Sapphire and landed a leading role of a lifetime and although she was recently predicted as the Best Supporting Actress for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards she will probably never lead another movie again and kind of like a one hit wonder star of the 1990’s. Sometimes roles are so degrading a new actress can never break out of the stereotypes attached to their character. I think Mo’nique should have played Precious’ role. She looks youthful enough and has done enough diverse roles that she can break out of any stereotypes. I just adore her on her show. Mo’nique is well and represents her guests like kings and queens, not just pimped celebs for ratings. She really knows her guests.
More than likely, comedian and talk show host, Mo’nique as the self-sympathizing mother ”Mary” of Precious will be slated for a Best Actress Golden Globe Award for her candid potrayal of one of the most disturbing roles depicting a black mother from inner city as an abusive, foul mouthed and degrading role model for her child as adapted from the book. I have no problem with the Mo’nique or Precious playing their roles, but why are both women cast for the part dark-skinned and overweight in this movie? Tyler Perry is known to bafoon the heavier women in his movies. All of the comedians have done it from Eddie Murphy to Martin Lawrence. I am starting to see a pattern and no longer find this funny. Heavy women are tired of being the butt of jokes. It’s hard to believe that fatter women were glorified as goddesses in ancient colonial times and skinny women drowned to prove they weren’t witches.

Commentary by HEATHER COVINGTON: Boris Kodjoe is one actor I love. He is so sweet, perfect from head to toe and I love how committed he is to his relationship with that beautiful soul Nicole Ari Parker. They are the sexiest couple alive and have been passionately devoted to supporting families with children diagnosed with Spinal Bifidi. They stay busy working and keep getting better with time. I want to see the two in a sexy remake of GHOST featuring the late Patrok Swayze. I think the two would do the film remake justice. Am I crazy? I have always dreamed of sleeping on a pillow with Boris Kodjoe’s face on it, so I headed on over to www.Boris-world.comand ordered me a sexy pillow from Boris Online Shop. Brace yourself ladies. Your access is granted online. Plus, proceeds go to the SOPHIE’S VOICE FOUNDATION. Now Nicole better send my pillow asap or there is going to be a catfight online She can’t keep that hunk all to herself and not share. Right ladies. LOL! Here is a candid interview with Boris Kodjoe whose upcoming movie SURROGATES is landing at number one at the box office. Bring it on Boris! Oh and BRUCE WILLIS TOO! Now you know everyone will be tuning in to BORIS THE BILLIONAIRE BOX OFFICE BEST ACTOR on the way! Polishing my toe nails right now! Nobody move!
Katie Featherson (An English major studying to be a teacher) and Michah Sloat (An aspiring day trader stockbroker) are a 3 year couple “engaged to be engaged” who happen to live in a posh multi-level dream complex complete with a leather sectional, parque floors, clean white walls, minimal art deco vintage work (Cheap), leopard throws (Cheap) and a state of the art kitchen with stainless steal knife sets (Best investment of the movie, but never used).
All seems to be going great until Katie’s boyfriend develops a fascination for video taping the couple while sound asleep to capture any “paranormal activity” in their home. Apparently, their home has excessive sounds, creaks and strange voices that awake the couple in the middle of the night leading to the belief that a ghost has inhabited their dwelling.
A bizarre realization occurs when Micah’s footage is able to confirm strange activities over a course of 20+ days from doors opening by themselves, powdery clawed footprint trails, moving chandeliers, dark shadows and open shutters.
Surprisingly, when obvious evidence proves there is a ghost in the house from burnt imprints on a ouija board, slammed doors without drafts, sleepwalking episodes and the forceful dragging of Katie’s body from her bed by air; the couple remains, hires a psychic and even follows the ghost traces around the house. If you have ever been a real roller coaster, the effects of seeing someone walk toward something you know is scary creates palpitations. An elderly couple who sat behind me didn’t look too stable so I couldn’t help but check on them when they were quiet. This movie is not even a good idea for healthy and young folks. A darn spider scares the lights on during the movie as a bunch of gangsters in the front row who walked into the theater late start yelling for their mothers.
Never have I seen a movie capture an audience’s attention with so many repeated scenes which do build up anticipation for the scariest scene ever people are awaiting and awaiting, but unfortunately, doesn’t quite land. The movie makes reference to the Exorcist, (Scariest movie of all time) and an old burnt photo that somehow followed Katie into her new house. There is also, mention of a woman from the 1970’s who endured the same demonic spirits which there may be a link, but these questions disappointingly remain unanswered. Hope there is a full length novel somewhere like the next thriller coming up and adapted from the book, Lovely Bones. Nothing like a book with details after you’ve seen a movie that keeps you guessing.
I have to give credit to Katie Featherson and Micah Sloat, who regardless of a much to do about nothing thriller movie with minimal low budget effects reminiscent of the Blair Witch Project, had natural appeal on the big screen and a flair for dialogue that made you seem like you were in this Paranormal house controlling each move.
The procrastination of the big thrill up until the end may change the way movies are made forever. When a movie lie Paranormal Activity makes no.1 at the box office by insulting the audience’s attention span daring them to walk out, but no one can, I can’t even downgrade this movie to a poor rating.
As nerved as goers felt at the end, the movie was thoroughly entertaining for its sheepish shenanigan thrills that were more laughable than scary, so you might as well see it and not be left out of the number one trending topic on Twitter for the month of October 2009.
The movie was so cheap it couldn’t even afford to get licensing rights for the footage of perhaps, a top tv show getting a small plug on a blue screen in the house before going fuzzy. To add further insult to injury, the psychic even left the home in a few seconds which won’t even earn actor Mark Fredrichs who played the hell out of this role a best supporting actor nomination. Overall, Paranormal Activity was a cheap thrill ride that stole my $10.00 and this time I got my money back by complaining about the noise level from the front row.
If the trans-human future predicted by visionary Ray Kurzweil in his best seller The Age of Spiritual Machines is at all accurate, then it is only a matter of time before a disturbing dystopia such as the one in Gamer might come to pass. Set in 2034, the chilling, sci-fi scenario established at the outset is dominated by Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall), a diabolical billionaire with mind-control technology at his disposal.
The world has been divided into the “haves” and the “have-nots,” with the members of the former group paying Castle for the privilege of controlling the behavior of the latter group in one of two high-tech, virtual reality video games. The first is called Society, a perverse variation of Sim City where players get to direct human beings with computer chips implanted in their brains living in a simulated, social-networking community. Given the voyeuristic nature of the kinky creeps with the joysticks in their hands, it is no surprise that the less fortunate participants often find themselves forced to mate with complete strangers or to engage in bizarre sex acts against their will.
