Bernie Mac (Bernard Jeffrey McCollough) was born on October 5, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois during a tumultuous time period in America’s history when segregation was in full effect in the rural south and north. On August 9, 2008, Bernie Mac dies at age 50 due to pneumonia complications. Survived by his daughter Je’Niece (Age 27), he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most revered comedians of our time gaining 2 Golden Globe Nominations and over 28 more award nominations and 11 wins. He is best known by children around America for his stellar performance on the tv sitcom, The Bernie Mac Show which he produced and has made numerous appearances on top shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Tavis Smiley, Entertainment Tonight and even episodes of Saturday Night Live. His rise to stardom and claim to fame as a comedian began with Def Comedy Jam. Upon making an appearance on the Oprah Show he mentions how as a child he was always called dirty because of his dark complexion by racist white people at the time, and so he always gave careful attention to his appearance, personal hygiene and personal grooming which Oprah commented on.
